The Morelli Foundation rejects Marisa Graham’s self-extension

The Morelli Foundation expressed its absolute rejection of Marisa Graham’s decision to self-extend her mandate at the head of the National Ombudsman for Children, questioning the legitimacy of her permanence in the position and denouncing her inaction in the face of extremely serious cases that have affected children and adolescents in Argentina.

“In a democratic country we cannot allow the Ombudsman to be usurped, an organization that should look after the rights of children and that, during Graham’s five years in office, has shown total inaction,” stated the Foundation, one of the oldest in the defense of the rights of children and adolescents and families in the country. They also pointed out that Graham’s appointment to the post, made by the previous government, was carried out despite the opposition of numerous organizations and the existence of cases of children abducted, murdered, abused and mistreated, without the Ombudsman’s Office having intervened effectively. In this regard, they mentioned emblematic cases such as those of Loan, Arali, Zoe Rodríguez, Milo Derto, Malena Vergara (Rainbow Case) and the girl Lila, among others.

One of the most serious cases reported by the Morelli Foundation involves the “Rainbow Case”, in which Graham prevented a police raid ordered by the La Rioja courts to rescue a girl who had been sought by the authorities for weeks. “At that time, activists, feminist NGOs and different groups showed up to obstruct the judicial action, including the deputy Mónica Macha, Ofelia Fernández and the lawyer Juan Pablo Gallego, who was inside the building where the operation was to take place,” the Foundation denounced. The case remains without progress in Comodoro Py.

Likewise, the Foundation criticized the lack of effective policies during Graham’s administration regarding the reduction of filicides, child violence, poverty and education. They also pointed out the absence of concrete measures for the protection of children with disabilities, a sector that, they denounced, “has not been a priority for the current Ombudsman.”

For all this, the Morelli Foundation demands that the institutional process be respected and a new Ombudsman for Children be appointed through the corresponding mechanisms, guaranteeing transparency and the true defense of children’s rights in Argentina.

We call on everyone to join us this Friday, February 7th starting at 4pm to march at the National Ombudsman for Children and Adolescents. Luis Maria Campos 46.
