The companies managing the largest supermarket chains are criticizing municipalities governed by Kirchnerism. They will begin to detail on their receipts the price increases caused by local taxes.
A topic that exploded in August 2024 has once again come to the forefront. Amid criticisms of Greater Buenos Aires municipalities for increasing taxes that raise prices, supermarket chains have started informing their customers about the percentage added to the tickets due to local tax hikes. They are particularly targeting municipalities run by Kirchnerist mayors.
Recently, the mayor of Tres de Febrero, Diego Valenzuela—of the opposition party Juntos por el Cambio, and now fully aligned with the government of Javier Milei—had called for the inclusion of a municipal tax detail on purchase receipts.
Supermarket chains like Coto, Carrefour, and Changomas will follow this approach: they will add a message on receipts in reference to the 0.8% Security and Hygiene Tax (TSH) charged by Tres de Febrero, compared to other municipalities like Lanús, which in 2024, contrary to the national government’s policy of tax reductions, raised the tax from 3.3% to 6%.
In Lanús, Coto, Cencosud (owner of Jumbo, Disco, and Vea), and Changomas outlets have displayed signs in their windows and at checkout counters, informing customers that prices were being increased due to the rise in this tax. They had already taken legal action in December.
Now, with the law that came into effect on January 1st, which requires large stores to detail the national tax burden on receipts, chains and wholesalers are pushing to have provincial taxes displayed as well. Smaller businesses can voluntarily comply, but it will be mandatory starting April 1st. In the first phase, the Fiscal Transparency for Consumers regime—which was designed by the NGO Lógica and became law in June—requires the separation of VAT and indirect taxes (such as excise duties), which have rates ranging from 5% to 35% on certain goods.
