A driver of a travel app was shot in the head in La Matanza. The crime occurred while the man was on his way to pick up a passenger in the Santa Clara neighborhood of Isidro Casanova, an area that has seen multiple incidents of insecurity in recent months. According to police sources, the attack occurred shortly before midnight, when the victim was walking down a poorly lit street.

Initial investigations suggest that the attack occurred in the context of an attempted robbery, although the prosecutor in charge of the case, Diego Rulli, is keeping other lines of investigation open. It is suspected that the attackers tried to take the victim’s belongings and vehicle but, when he resisted, they shot him at point-blank range. Several neighbors who were present tried to help him when they found him seriously injured inside his vehicle, but despite their efforts, he arrived dead at the hospital.

The course of the investigation

The victim was identified as Omar Quispe Teccse, 38 years old and was a worker who used the travel platform to generate income. His body was found inside a Peugeot Partner van at the intersection of Charrúa and Asia streets. Witnesses indicated that the man was still dying when the neighbors rushed him in a private vehicle to the Paroissien Hospital, where the doctors confirmed his death.

Relatives and coworkers expressed their outrage and asked for justice, pointing out that the insecurity in the area became unsustainable and that the authorities must do something because it is impossible to live like this.

The forensic experts in charge of the process carried out work at the crime scene with the aim of collecting key evidence, including fingerprints and gunpowder residue. In addition, prosecutor Rulli ordered the review of security camera images in the area and the collection of information from the application used by the victim, in order to reconstruct her last movements and find those responsible for the murder. It is being investigated whether the attackers had requested the trip through the platform or if it was a random attack.

Insecurity on the rise

The murder of Quispe Teccse adds to a series of violent attacks against app drivers that occurred throughout the Buenos Aires suburbs, not only in La Matanza. According to reports from workers in the sector, drivers are increasingly exposed to assaults and aggression, especially at night and in high-risk areas. Neighbors and drivers have already held various demonstrations demanding greater police presence and concrete measures to prevent new acts of violence.

For their part, the authorities are seeking to determine whether this crime is the result of a random attack or if there was some kind of premeditation behind the act. Meanwhile, the community continues to demand answers and solutions to the growing wave of insecurity affecting app-based transportation workers.
