A shocking criminal episode took place in the district of La Matanza, where three young people aged 13, 16 and 18 were arrested after a raid that included the theft of a vehicle, an attempt to steal a motorcycle and an armed confrontation with the police. The youngest of those involved was wounded by a bullet in the leg during the shooting and is out of danger.

It all began in La Tablada where the gang, which was armed, stole a grey Volkswagen Fox vehicle. With the stolen car, the three young men continued their journey in search of more victims and so, upon reaching Anatole France Street, almost at the corner of Centenera in San Justo, they tried to steal the motorcycle from a 43-year-old man who was arriving at his home. Upon realizing the attempted robbery, the victim ran away with the keys to his Yamaha FZ and avoided it.

Pursuit and confrontation

After the failed robbery attempt, the criminals fled in the Fox while the police, alerted by the reports, deployed a lockdown operation. The pursuit ended in Ciudad Evita, at the intersection of El Tiburón and El Meneo streets, when the driver of the stolen car lost control and crashed into a wall.

At that moment there was an exchange of gunfire between the thieves and the security forces. Finally, the three young men surrendered. The 13-year-old, who was wounded in the leg, was taken to a nearby hospital, while the other two members of the group were arrested and at the disposal of Justice.

According to sources in charge of the investigation, the 16-year-old teenager has a significant criminal past. Despite his young age, he is accused of having participated in an episode that occurred on March 7 of last year, in which City Police officer Jessica Díaz was shot. On that occasion, the agent was attacked when she resisted the theft of her car in front of her parents’ house, also in La Tablada.

The woman suffered serious injuries, but managed to survive after an intense shootout with the assailants.

Charges and judicial future

The three detainees now face a series of serious charges such as aggravated car theft, in addition to resistance to authority and the use of firearms. Prosecutor Juan Pablo Volpicina, in charge of the Prosecutor’s Office No. 2 for Juvenile Criminal Responsibility in La Matanza, continues with the investigation to clarify the detailed participation of each of those arrested in these crimes.

This case reopens the debate on the role of minors in crime and the responses that the judicial system and society can offer to prevent these situations. Experts on the subject agree that comprehensive public policies are needed that combine prevention, education and social programs, while strengthening the security and justice system to act effectively in the face of these episodes of violence.

The situation highlights a problem that requires immediate attention to protect both the victims, who are the main victims of the growth of insecurity, and the young people themselves who end up involved in crime and far from the educational field.
