Francisco Lamanna. In the radio program, we spoke with Francisco Lamanna, representative of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of La Matanza, who referred to the current situation of companies and merchants in the district.

At the beginning of the note, Francisco Lamanna told how they see the situation within La Matanza: “We are seeing two scenarios. One of people who have work, and in some cases quite a lot, and the other who do not have it and who are suffering the consequences of this adjustment. These two situations occur simultaneously due to different characteristics or types of companies that relate to where they aim with their clientele.”
“I do not have a precision of items because our sample has to do with the things that the partners of the Chamber inform us and tell us in the meetings. In general it seems, at least from those who come, that they are working,” he added.
He also stressed that “this is also due to an anticipation of the things that are going to happen because those who frequent the Chamber are much more informed than the SMEs that somehow work alone and without an environment that allows them to see what is happening around them.”
“This is the great division that has been systematically occurring and we are certain that this is the case,” he added.
The present of the merchants
In response to the specific question from the table, about some closed stores in González Catán and Gregorio de Laferrere, the interviewee responded: “There are paradoxical issues at this time. Those who made contracts in dollars are harmed in some way by the situation that occurs today and those who made contracts in pesos saw it updated. These are the ups and downs of this fiscal adjustment that is being made and these things happen that suddenly we were cheap for the world and today we are expensive.”
“The overvaluation of the peso caused this to change and the value increased in relation because circulation decreases. Until recently we were the other way around, we saw the complete opposite because people from abroad came to buy here, and now we are the ones who go out to neighboring countries,” he added.
He noted on this that “obviously, not only to buy utilitarian things, but also in terms of vacations” and that “seeing what they ask for here on the Argentine coast, people realize that they can go to Brazil, Uruguay or Chile. That changes decisions and money is redirected in other directions.”
The personal situation with his company
On the other hand, the head of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce of La Matanza, emphasized his particular situation: “Personally, regarding the company that we have, our expectations seem good if the demand remains as it is until now. In that case we can continue because we are above the break-even point and we are complying with all things.”
“But for how long and what complications there may be in the future is very difficult to predict. It is not up to us and it is not up to those who demand them,” he continued.
He also said that “if we lived from the counter or from everyday things we would already be thinking about downsizing or closing like many others.”
“There is an important factor that is causing stores to be closed today and it is a change in the sales dynamic, which is done a lot online today and there is no need to have stores. Today people sit at the computer and buy from there and businesses are becoming more and more distant for immediate purchase. People who have availability and can buy do so from home, knowing the product they are buying,” he said.
To close, he mentioned: “And for supplies too because we are having commercial relations with people we do not know personally. And it is a balanced relationship due to the circumstances that occur today.”
