In the radio program we spoke with Carlos Gdansky, former national deputy and general secretary of the UOM of La Matanza, who gave his vision of the role of the CGT in the current political context.

“A problem of society”

At the start of the telephone conversation, Carlos Gdansky analyzed what is happening in the political and union orbit of the country: “In reality I do not believe that it is exclusively the CGT that does nothing, I believe that there is a numbness in the entire political and union nucleus, beyond the social groups that are the ones that are mostly active because they are the way out for many people who are having a hard time. And they act precisely for the most needy but it is true that there is a kind of numbness both on the political and union level.”

“From my point of view, the problem is the same as always, it is not because of this new stage, but that we, both in politics and in trade unionism, Peronists always have some problem, and in reality there are very few of us who have worked for effective unity in the entire labor movement and in all of Peronism. When something is proposed, one thing is said and then when they arrive, they come up with something else. It is a general problem that we have had for several stages,” he added.

He then indicated that “it is a problem of men and women, it has nothing to do with the party” and that “this is like when people say ‘this Argentina’ and it has nothing to do with the country, which is a beauty from any point of view.”

“We have lots of things that the world yearns for, it is not Argentina, it is us, it is the people, it is society that creates the problems that we have in the end. Because it is the same society that votes for Peronism and that ends up voting for Macri and now for Milei. So, well, it is a problem of society,” he assured.

The responsibility of the movement

On the other hand, the former head of the CGT in La Matanza also stressed the political movement, to which he also grants a degree of responsibility: “It is a problem that is already permanent. I remember that for quite some time I spoke at some congresses and in some plenary sessions about the issue of internal disputes. We live in internal disputes, we even got used to having internal disputes in the consortiums, in the problems of the departments, we have internal disputes everywhere. If you go back a little through history in Argentina, you find this issue.”

“It is impossible, to this day, to break with internal disputes. I spent a lot of time in the labor movement and every time there are elections for national or partial politics, when the election ends we get together at a barbecue and we analyze. Some people will say that ‘the politicians always screw us’, that ‘we don’t have deputies or senators’ and the truth is that the politicians don’t screw us, we screw ourselves. We ended up with four or more groups because there is always someone who tries to pull the belts of the politician who can access power,” he added.

“When it is someone’s turn to be given a small position, the issue of unity and the great labor movement is over. Each one does his own thing and that is why there is the problem that exists. What the boys do not realize is that the more divisions they create, the more complicated everything is.”
