“The project does not speak of the essentiality of the budget or of the improvement of public education”

Essentiality. The rejection of the essentiality project.
Essentiality. The rejection of the essentiality project.

On the radio program, we spoke with Daniela Sposato, head of SUTEBA (Unified Union of Education Workers of Buenos Aires) in La Matanza, who analyzed the approval of education as an essential service in the House of Representatives and assured that they will fight.

The rejection of the essentiality project

At the beginning of the conversation on No Te Duermas, Daniela Sposato emphasized the approval of education as an essential service: “Since the projects that we know the state is promoting began to be discussed, we have been making different presentations in the chamber but also different mobilizations throughout Congress.”

“We were there on Wednesday because what we are saying is that this project does not speak of the essentiality of the educational budget or the improvement of public education, but is only a project that comes to curtail the right to strike,” he added.

At the same time he indicated that “that is why we repudiate it and that is why we are organizing ourselves so that when it is discussed in the Senate we can have a great federal march that obviously will have strikes not only here in the Province, but throughout the national territory” and that “yesterday (Thursday) we had an assembly in La Matanza and we voted for the continuation of this plan of struggle.”

“What we are saying is that the construction of this struggle has to be with the communities and what guarantees us the mobilization is that we are many colleagues because we have justified our day for the teachers’ conquest with a union constancy. Those who do not mobilize and are in the school, will do so by putting words and telling the community what the teachers are doing by protesting in Congress,” he explained.

The struggle measure

In line with the latter, Sposato added: “We think that the struggle measure has to be in the street or in the school, that is why the doubt of a strike or not also arose. We can guarantee that there will be a massive mobilization with union consistency and not those strikes where the families themselves ask where the teachers are.”

“Also, the complexity of the tool and the care of the strike tool is a conquest of the workers from the first organizational measures and that in the rest of the country, from three provinces that had attendance, today there are thirteen. We have to have enough intelligence from the union organization so that when we decide to do a strike it has the greatest possible forcefulness,” he said.

He also said that “we have been developing different actions in the districts and in front of Congress that will surely increase and also in conjunction with the rest of the labor unions” and that “we believe that it does not have to be a claim of the sector and also think that we are in very critical moments and we are going to be joining with other sectors to stop this attack that is not about public education but about all rights and workers.”

In closing, in response to the specific question from the table, he emphasized a possible judicialization of the issue: “It can be judicialized just as the issue of income tax is judicialized and also once that law is sanctioned we have to see how each province will do so that it happens but the reality is that we want to stop it in the Senate and not let it happen. And we also have to see parts of that project, because it consists of several points, and one is the right to strike. There is talk of percentages and days on which the school has to be open.”
