The historic company Anselmo Morvillo announced the cessation of its activities in Avellaneda, leaving more than 200 employees in uncertainty. The Internal Commission denounces a “management lockout” and demands urgent measures to sustain production.
The printing company Anselmo Morvillo, with almost 50 years of experience in Avellaneda, announced at midnight on Wednesday, February 25, the definitive closure of its plant. According to the statement released by the company, the decision responds to a financial crisis aggravated by the 63% drop in its production volume, the loss of key clients, the increase in the cost of inputs and the demand for advance payment of paper.
The social and labor impact of this measure is immediate: more than 200 workers were left in uncertainty, while the Internal Commission of the printing company denounces a direct attack on labor rights.
In response, the employees decided to occupy the plant indefinitely, demanding the maintenance of jobs and the continuity of production.
A sector in crisis and an ongoing struggle
The closure of Morvillo is not an isolated event. In the last year, the crisis in the graphic industry has deepened, affecting numerous companies in the sector. The economic recession, the increase in the cost of inputs and the digitalization of the media have hit graphic production hard, generating layoffs and closures throughout the country.
The Federación Gráfica Bonaerense (FGB) described the measure as a “management lockout” and called an urgent plenary of delegates to define resistance actions. The union organization demands the intervention of the Ministry of Labor of the province of Buenos Aires, demanding concrete measures to protect jobs and guarantee the continuity of the plant.
For their part, the workers denounce that, in addition to the closure, there are versions about the arrival of investors who would be demanding massive layoffs, salary reductions and loss of labor conquests as a condition for resuming production. These conditions are unacceptable for the employees, who reject any solution that implies more precariousness and adjustments to the workforce.
A call for solidarity and resistance
In its statement, the Internal Commission of the Morvillo printing company called on the labor movement and, in particular, the printing union, to provide their active solidarity in this struggle. The permanence in the plant is a measure of force with a clear objective: to defend each job and prevent the closure from taking place without resistance.
Among the alternatives under discussion, some sectors raise the possibility that the plant be recovered by its workers as a cooperative, following the example of other factories that managed to sustain production after the employers abandoned it. However, this option has not yet been formally debated and requires political and financial support to be realized.
Meanwhile, the labour and trade union community is closely following the development of the conflict, which could set a new precedent in the fight to defend employment in a context of deep economic crisis.
The closure of Morvillo not only represents the loss of an emblematic company, but also the advancement of a policy that leaves hundreds of families adrift.
