A corner in La Matanza, in front of the Santos Vega neighborhood, has become the epicenter of violent assaults that terrify drivers. At this traffic light on Route 3, criminals attack those who stop, even shooting for valuable objects such as a cell phone.

The intersection in question is located in Lomas del Mirador, in front of the Santos Vega neighborhood, at the intersection of National Route 3 (also known as Juan Manuel de Rosas Avenue) and Avellaneda Street. Security cameras captured the dramatic moment when Ignacio Zúñiga, one of the latest victims, was shot in the face.

The incident was reported in Mediodía Noticias by journalist May Martorelli, who highlighted the dilemma faced by drivers: “Stopping at a traffic light, yes or no, in dangerous areas like this. Ignacio Zúñiga was in his car with a co-worker when a criminal took advantage of the fact that the vehicles were stopped and attacked him. Since he did not hand over the loot, they shot him.”

The fear of drivers is not unfounded. This place, which has already been the scene of numerous robberies, exposes a harsh reality: the risk of stopping at a traffic light or the cost of running a red light and facing a fine.

Guillermo Lobo, also a journalist, pointed out that in some municipalities in Greater Buenos Aires the traffic lights work intermittently during certain hours as a preventive measure, a solution that, although palliative, shows the seriousness of the insecurity.

The situation is not new. In 2022, journalist Luis Otero had reported the same problem at that intersection. However, the attacks continue, claiming new victims such as Zúñiga, who now joins the list of people affected by violence in the area.

After the attack, three people were arrested. Among those arrested are Alem Alberto Bryan, Román Agustín Cáceres, Candela Camila and Selena Naiara Gómez. The authorities also confiscated weapons and 11 cell phones in their possession, evidencing the danger that these criminals represent. However, the fear that the judicial system will quickly release them persists. “The problem is that they do not end up in the revolving door,” said Lobo.

The repetition of these events in Greater Buenos Aires underscores the need for more effective and sustainable security measures. Meanwhile, motorists continue to face a difficult decision: stop and expose themselves to theft or defy traffic rules to avoid it. In either case, insecurity remains a constant threat.
