Cicop. Following the announcement by the National Government, the health professionals’ union warned about the impact of the measure and its consequences. According to them, since its creation more than seven decades ago, the WHO has been a pillar in the fight against diseases, the establishment of policies based on scientific evidence and the response to health emergencies.

The Trade Union Association of Health Professionals of the Province of Buenos Aires (CICOP) warned about the impact and consequences that Argentina’s withdrawal from the World Health Organization will have by decision of the National Government.

President Javier Milei announced in the last few hours Argentina’s withdrawal from the WHO and immediately generated strong criticism from different sectors. CICOP described the measure as “a serious setback in public health,” warning about its possible repercussions.

According to the government, the decision is based on “deep differences” with the WHO’s health management during the COVID-19 pandemic and follows the line of the recent disengagement of the United States.

However, specialists maintain that this rupture could leave the country in a position of isolation in a context where international cooperation is key to facing global health challenges.

Since its creation more than seven decades ago, the WHO has been a pillar in the fight against diseases, the establishment of policies based on scientific evidence and the response to health emergencies. Argentina’s exit from the organization could have multiple negative consequences.

What could Argentina’s exit from the WHO generate?

One of the repercussions is the loss of access to crucial health information. The WHO acts as a global center for the exchange of data and epidemiological alerts. Without this connection, the country could be left behind in the detection and prevention of diseases.

The decision would also imply a weakening of public health programs. Numerous vaccination, prevention and treatment plans depend on the technical and financial support of the WHO. Its interruption would put their continuity and effectiveness at risk.

It could also lead to scientific and technical isolation. International cooperation in medical research is key to the development of treatments and health strategies. Without the support of the WHO, Argentina could be left out of health innovation projects.

CICOP believes that this decision is part of an adjustment plan that has already caused massive layoffs and cuts in key areas of the public health system. “Health problems do not recognize borders. International cooperation is essential to protect the health of the population. We urge the Government to reconsider this measure and prioritize the well-being of all Argentines,” the union concluded.
