When thinking about the education and training of children and young people, reading is essential. This is also what Fundación Leer thinks of, and this is what the NGO was born with: “In 1997 Fundación Leer was born with the objective of contributing to the training of children and young people in Argentina as readers. In this context, the foundation seeks to generate AN impact by providing the necessary tools so that reading is a right for all Argentine children.”
“To achieve this, we work with teachers, directors, librarians, community representatives and families in all corners of the country, providing them with training and educational resources for the promotion of reading and literacy,” they added.
They also stressed that “our work is at a national level, with a local perspective. The foundation’s programs, campaigns and proposals are aimed at ensuring that children can and want to read” and that “that is, they aim both at developing the skills necessary for their literacy journey and at training the child as a reader.”
The main programs carried out by the foundation
The Fundación Leer has some grassroots campaigns that are central to its territorial work. One of them is the National Reading Marathon: “It has been held for
more than twenty years throughout the country in schools, libraries, community centers and health centers. The objective is to promote reading throughout the year and culminate with a great celebration where adults and children read on the same day throughout Argentina.”
Another important activity is the Desafío Leer, also called El Club, which is “a virtual platform aimed at families and teachers of primary schools throughout the country that proposes the creation of Reading Clubs so that children read and write better.”
“The Galactic Readers is another of our proposals, which is based on technology. Through a video game developed by the foundation, boys and girls between 6 and 9 years old can learn to read fluently. It is a fundamental tool for both teachers and parents,” they added.
Through social networks, they highlight the children who are interested in reading and reward the best readers of each month.
Other initiatives to keep in mind
Among other activities of the organization is also Leer te Ayuda, a program aimed at children in preschool and primary school that aims to strengthen their strategies and achieve successful learning of reading and writing.
While Misión Alpha is a new educational program that “delves into the world of science, engineering, technology and mathematics; and extends to children in the first years of secondary school,” they said.
Recognitions they have received in recent years
For their valuable work with children, emphasizing the importance of reading and literacy, this NGO has received considerable recognition. The work they do was declared of Cultural Interest by the Legislature of the City of Buenos Aires. But their achievements do not stop there.
In 2012 they received “La Rueda Rotaria” (The Rotary Wheel) awarded by the Rotary Club for their activity in the field; in 2013 the “Melvin Jones Honorable Mention” by the Lions Club and the “Pregonero Especial 2013” (Special Preacher 2013) awarded by the El Libro Foundation for being disseminators of children’s literature; in 2015 the “Obrar” (Work) awarded annually by the Argentine Advertising Council and two years later the “Eikon 2017” through the Imagen Magazine.
More recently, they received the “Platinum Konex Award” in the Cultural Entities category and the “Samsung Innova 2019” for the Leer 20-20 Digital Platform as the most innovative project in the Art and Culture category.
