Franco Torales, secretary of Youth of La Matanza, reflected on the mood of young people in the neighborhoods, the impact of the first year of Javier Milei’s government and the need to achieve unity within Peronism to recover the lost prominence.
The official describes a social environment marked by frustration and sadness, especially among young people, who, to a large extent, chose to support Javier Milei’s project. “I took hours in a school, I am giving classes, and sometimes I chat with my students or I talk with the students at the school. The situation is complex, “We all know that,” he acknowledged.
However, Torales maintains that this adverse climate will not necessarily define the results at the polls. “Although we can measure that people are sadder, that they are not able to make ends meet, I do not believe that this can impact the elections,” he affirmed.
Along the same lines, the official added: “I do not believe that… I hope so, I hope that we can rebuild Peronism and that we can win, but I believe that we have to generate overcoming proposals and get away from the daily conflicts that we sometimes have as a movement, and that is not happening.”
For Torales, the main challenge of Peronism lies in recovering its capacity to build a project that inspires new generations. “It is necessary to achieve unity in Peronism in order to think about offering a life project and a future project to a young person, and today that is not happening,” he stressed.
The secretary stressed that youth do not act impulsively or uninformed, but rather carefully evaluate their political options. “I believe that young people are not stupid. Young people know very well what they choose sometimes and why they don’t choose one and why they choose another. It can be a punishment vote,” he reflected.
In addition, Torales recalled how, in the past, many young people were attracted by the national and popular model of Néstor Kirchner, while today the opposite occurs. “Just as many young people fell in love with the national and popular project, today many young people fell out of love with the project that existed and chose this right-wing model,” he added.
In this context, the official reiterated: “although today there is a mood of sadness where there may be a bit of anger, that still will not mean that young people will go directly to Peronism,” he said.
Social networks: a key tool
Another of the points highlighted by Torales is the role of social networks in the construction of narratives and their impact on the youth electorate. He recognized that Peronism has not been able to adapt to changes in digital communication.
“One of the mistakes we have made as Peronists is precisely not knowing how to interpret the moment when the use of social networks and the good use of social networks was necessary and continues to be necessary,” he admitted.
Torales also warned about the risks of misusing these platforms. “I think that using social networks to do harm, as other sectors have done, is very complex. Today, with the ‘fake news’ or the armed conflicts that can be generated, they really harm and damage people, families, and it seems to me that in that sense we must be very cautious,” he said.
