Daniel Tronti, Secretary General of CTA La Matanza and Vice President of the local School Council, was interviewed on “No Te Duermas” (Radio Hexa, Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM) and provided details about the attempt to unify the two workers’ unions.
The Central de Trabajadores de la Argentina Autónoma (CTA-A) and the Central de Trabajadores de la Argentina de los Trabajadores (CTA-T), two organizations that have been separate since 2010, have begun a historic process aimed at reunification.
Meetings in different regions have marked the beginning of this process, especially in Buenos Aires Province and in La Matanza, where the activities of the two unions are increasingly coordinated.
Tronti explained, “This is a very rich process and, for us, historic because after 14 years of being divided, we are now working on unification.” He emphasized that “the struggle and action criteria in the streets have been coming together for quite a while, not just with the emergence of the Milei government a year ago, but also in some actions during the Mauricio Macri administration.”
Regarding the unification project, the union leader added: “This recent process, which began a few months ago, is a decision for a complete unity path,” meaning the goal is to achieve a single leadership.
According to Tronti, in some areas this process is “smoother,” such as in Buenos Aires Province, while in others, for various reasons, it is “slower.” However, the goal is clear: “The idea is to reach unification by 2026, when the elections for the two CTAs take place, aiming for a complete unity process,” he said.
When asked what is needed to reach an agreement, Tronti pointed out that both unions have been carrying out activities together and there are no issues with selecting action criteria.
In this regard, the union leader shared that they supported the workers’ claims at Medamax and Edenor regarding outrageous price increases and potential power cuts due to unpaid bills. They are also organizing meetings with La Matanza’s Health Department in local neighborhoods to raise awareness and prevent the transmission of dengue.
The Current Situation of Workers
Regarding the current challenges faced by workers from all sectors, Tronti explained that the unions within the CTA, such as SUTEBA (teachers), AJB (judicial workers), CICOP (health workers), and SUTEPA (PAMI workers), regularly assess labor issues. “In each meeting, they diagnose what is happening in their union with their workers, and the truth is, it’s terrible,” he lamented.
The Secretary General made special mention of the critical situation at ATE (the Argentine State Workers’ Association), which has suffered around 32,000 layoffs nationwide, and warned of a potential new wave of dismissals on December 30.
Are the Unions Up to the Task?
In response to criticisms of the unions for not taking enough direct action against the National Government’s austerity policies, the union leader assured: “We’ve made a very strong resistance to this model from the beginning. On January 24, there was the first strike, and then the overwhelming force of the government made it so there were moments when we couldn’t fully resist.”
At the same time, Tronti clarified: “Workers don’t talk about other workers. At least the leaders of CTA talk about it with the workers, not outwardly,” and highlighted that “on December 5, we were in Plaza de Mayo, and many unions from the CGT were there supporting the two CTAs. It was an important mobilization. We started the year in the streets and ended it in the streets. That was our premise.”
In this regard, the union leader reiterated: “We are making an important resistance. Our axiom is that—resist until we win,” and confirmed that the space participates in La Matanza’s multisectoral movement, sharing activities in various neighborhoods of the district.
