At the beginning of the interview, Gustavo Cid recounted how the long weekend was: “The weekend was quite busy in terms of fires, rescues, a bit of everything. In Ramos Mejía, near Rivadavia and Díaz Vélez, we were working all night and part of the morning even with the Tres de Febrero firefighters because the area is the border with Ciudadela, and they gave us support.”
“It was a fire in the entire warehouse of the industry, we worked with several teams, including the hydro-elevator that was extremely necessary to work from a height on an elevated plane, and the truth is that thanks to that vehicle we were able to reduce the extinguishing time a lot. Luckily there were no injuries,” he added.
At the same time, he noted that “we also had an important warehouse in the town of Virrey del Pino where several teams worked throughout Sunday” and that “as we always say, it is an institution that does not stop because it is a very large jurisdiction with a lot of activity, a lot of population and this demands having an active fire department that is up to the task to be able to provide this very important service to the community.”
The number of services in the district
In line with the above, he said: “There are fire institutions in the country that sometimes have one or two fires per month and we can have that in just one morning. There was another one in the Ruta Atlántica bus company, in which we really worked very well with the teams from the Tapiales detachment and the central barracks.”
“The work that determines why the fire started is carried out by another force, the Buenos Aires police, which has a group of experts who are firefighters, and they are the ones who work when requested by the insurance company and when there are victims. Knowing the causes and the origin, that is what the expert reports are about. It is not a simple task, but we work and we achieve it,” he explained.
He also said that “in general there are all kinds of services every week, there is really a lot of work” and that “during the week there was a rescue of a horse that had fallen into a well in the González Catán area.”
“It is an everyday thing, we have to keep in mind that there are two and a half million people and 323 square kilometers of activity and this is really very important,” he indicated.
The role of management
On the other hand, the interviewee stressed: “That is why we emphasize the issue of management that we, the directors and the active body, have to do so that this can function as a team and supply the needs. Four or five years ago we had an institutional situation in which we were practically on the verge of not providing service and today, except for rare exceptions such as those from Tres de Febrero acting due to proximity, support is hardly requested from other jurisdictions.”
“We have bought 18 internal rapid attack units, fire equipment, rescue equipment, escalators. We have trained all the firefighters and now comes the stage of re-equipping them with their personal items because services are provided every day and the equipment suffers enormous wear and tear,” he explained.
To close, he mentioned that “work is already underway to acquire new elements” and that “for us the useful life is two years because there are more than 5000 services throughout the year.”
