Lionel Messi was left out of the final Argentina national team roster for the South American Qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil. The Argentine captain was released by Lionel Scaloni due to a left adductor injury suffered in the match between Inter Miami and Atlanta United, in Matchday 4 of the MLS.
After missing three matches due to muscle strain, Messi had returned to the field last Thursday, in the match against Jamaica’s Cavaliers, in the second leg of the Concacaf Champions League Round of 16. In that match, he came on and scored a goal in the final minutes. A few days later, he returned to the starting lineup against Atlanta United with the goal of being in optimal condition for his matches with Argentina.
However, in the 64th minute of that match, he made one of his trademark runs into the opponent’s box and unleashed a powerful shot that was saved by goalkeeper Brad Guzan. He then lifted his shorts and touched the affected area, revealing discomfort. Although he continued on the field, he did so with some difficulty, failing to execute set pieces or making any significant effort.
Hours later, tests were conducted and the extent of the injury was confirmed: “Inter Miami CF has provided an update on captain Leo Messi’s injury. He underwent an MRI this morning to evaluate the extent of the discomfort in the adductor region, which he experienced during last night’s match against Atlanta United.
The results of the examination confirmed the presence of a low-grade injury to the adductor muscle. His clinical progress and response to treatment will determine his availability to compete,” read the statement issued by the Garzas.
There is still no certainty about when he will return to the field. The positive thing for him is that Inter Miami will not be playing this weekend due to the FIFA World Cup. He will not play again until Saturday, March 29, against the Philadelphia Union, starting at 8:30 p.m. Raúl Antuña resigns as San Martín (SJ) coach
Matchday 10 of the Professional League’s Apertura tournament left another team without its coach: Raúl Antuña decided to step down in San Martín de San Juan.
The San Juan team lost at home to Platense 2-0. After the match, Antuña decided to resign, and the management accepted it. This is the ninth coach to leave his position so far this season.
San Martín president Jorge Miadosqui was the first to confirm the news: “He told us to look for a coach. He resigned from us; we’re looking for a manager.” Speaking to the press, Antuña explained: “Yes, I resigned. There are times when you have to step down. San Martín is above people and names.”
“We didn’t imagine it; it was a very quick decision. San Martín arrived before Antuña. It was all very quick and a decision we didn’t expect,” he added, emphasizing: “Whoever comes in will find an impressive squad. We’ll be here until the next coaching staff is in place.”
Is Troglio staying? “We can turn things around, but it has to be as soon as possible.”
Seven games without a win. That’s the current state of Instituto in the Apertura of the Professional League, with an outlook that isn’t encouraging, but that also provides a starting point to try to turn things around and recover. That, at least, is how the Córdoba-born team’s technical director, Pedro Troglio, put it.
Far from setting deadlines, Troglio spoke about La Gloria’s poor form, highlighting how his players’ performance declined from one half to the next in the 4-1 defeat to Lanús. “The analysis I make today is against me. I’m here eager to move forward; I couldn’t imagine going seven matches without a win,” Troglio said in a press conference.
This poor away record has begun to carry over into the tournament as a whole, with two draws and five losses in the last seven games of the tournament. That’s why the coach himself declared: “We can turn things around, but it has to happen sooner rather than later,” when speaking about Instituto’s difficult time in the Apertura.
