Interviewed in No Te Duermas (Radio Hexa, Monday to Friday from 09.00 to 12.00), Franco Torales, Secretary of Youth of La Matanza, analyzed the current panorama of youth policies and provided details of the project that seeks to reactivate opportunities for young people in the municipality after the elimination of key programs such as Potenciar Joven.

“We had a scholarship program at the time coordinated with the Ministry of Social Development of the Nation that, when the Milei government took over, ended and was canceled. “This program covered 5,000 children,” lamented Torales.

However, he stressed that they are currently working in coordination with the Social Development area of La Matanza and the Youth Directorate of the Province of Buenos Aires to develop a new initiative that benefits young people from 18 to 25 years old.

The project seeks to encourage young people to become community promoters in areas such as student centers, environmental projects, urban culture and more. “It is a scholarship for young people, so they can come once or twice a week, which will also allow them to study. The compensation is that they can be promoters of the secretariat in the neighborhoods and carry out the programs in the neighborhoods. That is what is enriching about this program,” explained Torales.

The main focus is on young people in the process of tertiary or university training, who, according to Torales, will not only receive an incentive for their personal development, but will also strengthen local public policies. “The idea is that I can empower them and, in turn, that they accompany us a lot in the construction of public policies within the neighborhoods,” he said.

Joint construction and adapted to the needs

The secretary stressed that the program activities will be designed together with the participants, taking into account their interests and profiles. In addition, he mentioned that the work from the secretariat is based on two fundamental pillars: “Building the organized community, working jointly with churches, social organizations and schools. For us, the secondary schools, which are more than 200 state-run in La Matanza, are the main focus. Because in each neighborhood there is a school, and there is our titanic task with the student centers.”

On the other hand, Torales highlighted the importance of reaching young people who are not part of any institution or organization through digital tools. “We are focusing a lot of work on social networks to call those young people who are not within an organization or institution. If a young person wants to do something cultural or sporting but does not belong to an institution, we use digital tools to reach them. We generate meetings and projects that we hope to launch definitively at the end of January or beginning of February,” he said.

Requirements and call

The program is aimed at young people between 18 and 24 years old who are in the process of academic training and do not receive a salary. According to Torales, the objective is to support those who are looking for their first job or are developing academically without a source of income. “The idea is to accommodate schedules according to the activities of the young people, whether it is studying or working in a particular place,” he added.

Those interested can register through the social networks of Juventudes La Matanza, where they will find the necessary links. “In less than 48 hours, someone from the team will contact those registered,” said Torales.

With this project, the Youth Secretariat of La Matanza aims to provide a concrete opportunity for young people to develop, actively participate in their communities and build a better future.
