“La Alameda” is an NGO that fights against human trafficking, slave labor, child exploitation, prostitution and drug trafficking. It was originally born as a neighborhood assembly in the 2001 crisis and had national and international recognition with the denunciations and escraches to clandestine workshops.
Its leading role led to changes in national and provincial legislation, such as municipal ordinances that combat trafficking and slave labor, as well as assistance to victims.
In No te Duermas we spoke with Facundo Lugo, representative of the organization that was very present from the beginning in the development of the Loan case.
The uncertainty of society
At the beginning of the note, Lugo analyzed the case of Loan’s disappearance in comparison to others: “It is not a case that is very different from others that occur in other parts of our country. What it generated was a commotion that did not happen in other cases and in our opinion this has to do with the situation of uncertainty that the population lives. We make a parallel of this case of Loan with how the population reacted to the case of Marita Verón.”
“If one takes into account the political, economic and social context, they were quite similar situations. In the case of Verón, we came from the fact that the convertibility had exploded, high unemployment and poverty figures and a similar situation occurs now with the uncertainty. Regarding who voted for those who govern the country today,” he developed.
He then said that “any family wants their children to be found and in the case of Loan it shows not only that he was not searched for as it should have been but that those who were initially in charge of that search are now either detained or prosecuted.”
“So the complicity of a part of the state, of a part of the security forces in the abduction and disappearance of a 5-year-old child like Loan is very palpable,” he indicated.
The role of the media
The interviewee then referred to the actions of the mass media in covering the case: “It is a human issue, one can vote for a certain party, have confidence or not in this government, but there is an issue that is transversal and that is that a 5-year-old child is not with his family and where he should be and that is what generates an impact and a commotion that unifies.”
“The proof was that for two weeks we had it almost on national television, there were even some media that resisted and finally, not only did they have to cover the news, but they also sent mobile phones that are very expensive to maintain in the big media. This speaks of a commotion and we believe that some journalists mistakenly said that the Loan case covers up economic and political issues and we believe that it is the other way around,” he added.
He then pointed out that “we consider that this is emerging due to social discontent, which just as at one point at the provincial level it was channeled in Misiones by the teachers’ protest, at the national level it was the university march that allowed a lot of people to come out to protest, we believe that the Loan case is an emergence of social unrest and a way of expressing discontent.”
“It would be the discontent with the government that in this case is symbolized, if you will, by the disappearance of a 5-year-old child, which is a very specific case where I know that the life, freedom and dignity of a person are attacked and where you clearly have a part of the provincial government or the security forces involved,” he concluded.
