A group of app workers entered a settlement to rescue a stolen vehicle and denounced the lack of police protection in the area.
The weariness and the feeling of helplessness led a group of delivery workers to make an extreme decision. After a colleague was assaulted in La Matanza, the app workers organized their own operation to recover the stolen motorcycle.
The episode, recorded on video and viralized on social networks, exposed the vulnerability of those who work on public roads. The incident occurred on Saturday at 9:50 p.m. at the intersection of Ezaguirre and Perón, when a delivery man was approached by an armed robber. According to witnesses, the criminal threatened him with a firearm and demanded the motorcycle, his fanny pack and his cell phone.
In an unusual scene, the victim tried to negotiate with the attacker, asking him to keep his documentation and his phone, a key tool for his work. Finally, he handed over the motorcycle and the criminal escaped.
Immediately, the victim alerted his colleagues through a WhatsApp group. In a matter of minutes, several delivery men organized themselves and began to track the vehicle. The chase took them to Villa Santos Vega, a settlement in San Justo, where the criminals took refuge with the stolen motorcycle.
The decision was quick and coordinated. “They stole my motorcycle in Ezaguirre and Perón. They went through Ombú, to Route 3,” wrote the victim in the WhatsApp group at 9:49 p.m. Minutes later, the delivery men located the vehicle and decided to enter the settlement to recover it.
In the video spread on social networks, more than a dozen motorcyclists can be seen advancing in a caravan through the corridors of the slum. “The motorcycle is inside. They are going to shoot them,” a woman who was filming the scene from the first floor can be heard saying.
Despite the risk, the workers managed to recover the motorcycle without the intervention of the police. In the images, no presence of the security forces is observed, which generated indignation among the delivery workers, who denounced the lack of protection in the area.
The delivery workers who participated in the recovery of the motorcycle gave their testimony about the insecurity they face daily. “We got involved. If we don’t move, nobody is going to help us,” said one of them. Another added: “We are all colleagues, we regrouped and we recovered the motorcycle. We literally did what the police should have done.”
Many delivery workers have chosen to modify their vehicles to avoid theft. “Look at how we have the motorcycle, all disassembled. The police are there, we are not going to say no, but they do not give you a solution,” said one worker.
The frequency of thefts worries the delivery community. “At least one person a day is left without a motorcycle and nobody does anything,” complained a delivery man. Another added: “If we put on our helmet, they rob us. If we don’t put on our helmet, the police stop us.”
