On Friday, January 24, the second symbolic embrace of CEMEFIR was held to demand the continuity of the institution in the face of the threat of the auction of the building and subsequent closure of the only public and free place in the La Matanza district, specialized in physical medicine and motor rehabilitation.

A little history

It should be remembered that this health center is in danger of closing due to a lawsuit that may activate the auction of the building to settle a debt of around 400 thousand dollars, a story that began more than 10 years ago due to the irregular management of the Institution’s Cooperative by who was its president at that time, Dr. Diego Viola, who sold “flying checks” in the name of the Cooperative, which were later rejected by the banks, generating that debt for the institution. One of the victims, Alberto José Crócamo, bought the rejected checks and became the main creditor of the Cooperadora and is taking legal action to execute the mortgage of the building and collect the debt. The case is handled by Dr. Laura Mato of the Civil and Commercial Court of First Instance No. 1 who has activated the file to proceed with the execution and the auction.

Waiting for the expropriation.

In 2021, Law 15318, approved by the provincial legislature, declared the expropriation of the property for reasons of public utility and to transfer it to the Municipality of La Matanza for the operation of CEMEFIR for which it established a period of 3 years to carry out said expropriation, a period that expires in February of this year and nothing has been done so far in that regard. Therefore, the institution is in the countdown as to the execution of the auction and closing.

New hug and march.

On this occasion, the embrace and subsequent march, like the first time, started from the building at Perú 2433, went along Av. Arieta, after stopping in front of the Municipality and ending again at CEMEFIR. Patients, neighbors and workers from other health departments of the municipality participated, as well as workers from the Professor Alejandro Posadas National Hospital, the Diego Paroissien Provincial Hospital and organizations of health professionals such as CICOP, Matanza section, APS-Matanza and organizations of retirees. The workers who were on duty could not participate because, according to what they declared to our media, they were threatened with sanctions by the Secretary of Health if they participated in the march. Leandro Santaella, the municipality’s Health Director, participated in the event. During his speech he reassured the patients, pointing out the Secretary’s commitment to continue the operation of CEMEFIR in the place and, in response to the workers’ request for a meeting, he promised to pass on the request to Dr. Alejandro Collia, Secretary of Health, a request that had already been made by the Patients’ Commission and had not received a response to date. The CEMEFIR inspector, Dr. Vicente Gago, also took part in the event.

Patients and workers hope that what Dr. Santaella has proposed will be reaffirmed by the head of the Health Department and that the continuity of CEMEFIR will be guaranteed with the full care of patients and the maintenance of the jobs of professionals and workers.
