This Friday, simultaneous assemblies will be held to demand salary increases and to defend the only free rehabilitation center in the district. They will be held at the José Equiza Maternal and Child Hospital in González Catán, the Teresa Germani Maternal and Child Hospital in Gregorio de Laferrere, the Central Polyclinic and the Children’s Hospital in San Justo.
Workers from various hospitals in La Matanza will hold a series of simultaneous assemblies this Friday to demand salary increases, better working conditions and to express their support for the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center (CEMEFIR), which faces a possible closure due to a lawsuit.
The actions will be held between 09:00 and 10:00 hours and will include symbolic hugs in the hospitals and at the CEMEFIR headquarters, located at Perú 2433, San Justo. The CEMEFIR health center could be auctioned off to settle a debt of approximately 400 thousand dollars, which would leave numerous patients without care and its workers in an uncertain situation.
“The CEMEFIR building is going to be auctioned off and the patients will be left without care and we, the colleagues, do not know where they will end up, it is all uncertainty. So far they do not give us importance, they do not listen to us, they do not call us, they look the other way. That is why we are going to join forces among all the hospitals,” declared Juan Roa, a worker at the José Equiza Maternal and Child Hospital in González Catán.
Roa also stressed that, in addition to support for CEMEFIR, the workers continue to demand “salary improvements, the incorporation of self-employed workers into the plant and the transfer to permanent staff of those contracted.”
For his part, Horacio, an employee at the San Justo Central Polyclinic, explained: “We have been taking measures for two months now, holding meetings so that the Executive listens to us. Now it was decided to take this measure together in the four hospitals to show our solidarity to CEMEFIR.” In addition, the worker added: “what is happening in health in La Matanza and in particular in the Central Polyclinic of San Justo is a lack of personnel, supplies and the lack of responsibility of the Executive that does not call, does not approach to negotiate or to provide us with the necessary elements to work.”
“We are workers who want to be at the service of the people, not to be holding meetings demanding a decent salary,” he added.
Karina, a worker at the Teresa Germani Maternal and Child Hospital in Gregorio de Laferrere, added another problem to the list of complaints: insecurity. “There are many people who are resigning due to the lack of security, of police,” she denounced, and detailed that the hospital staff has been the victim of armed robbery, both at the site and in their vehicles. “Germani is a disaster,” she lamented.
From the San Justo Children’s Hospital, Eva confirmed that the assembly will be held at 9:00 a.m., followed by a symbolic embrace in support of CEMEFIR. In addition, she recalled that wage claims and better working conditions are constant.
The situation in the hospitals of La Matanza reflects a deep crisis in the public health system, where workers seek to be heard and for concrete measures to be taken to guarantee both patient care and the safety and stability of employees. The actions planned for this Friday are another attempt to make their demands visible and prevent the closure of CEMEFIR, a key institution for the community.
