The accused was detained for a few hours but was released. However, the investigation against him continues. The drug, a powerful drug used in medicine as an analgesic and sedative, has generated deep crises in countries such as the United States due to its improper use.

Fentanyl, a powerful drug used in medicine as an analgesic and sedative, has generated deep crises in countries such as the United States due to its improper use. In Argentina, a recent case set off alarms at the Paroissien Hospital, located in Isidro Casanova, La Matanza district, where the theft of three ampoules of this substance was reported.

The Justice Department is investigating the incident, which involves a 34-year-old nurse identified as Walter Mansilla. According to the hospital’s security cameras, Mansilla entered the establishment disguised as a doctor, accessed a restricted area and stole three ampoules of fentanyl.

The case began when the head of the Paroissien Hospital reported the missing ampoules. When the security cameras were checked, Mansilla could be seen entering the hospital in medical clothing and leaving shortly after with his hands in his pockets. Afterwards, he went to his car and left the place.

The doctors at the hospital, when consulted, confirmed having seen him in the restricted area. With this evidence, the Police set up a surveillance operation at the hospital and arrested Mansilla when he arrived in an ambulance.

“Once they were able to determine who he was, the Police set up a surveillance operation at the establishment and arrested him when he arrived with an ambulance,” explained sources of the investigation.

Search and discovery of the ampoules

After the arrest, prosecutor Evangelina Sánchez, from the UFI N.º 11 of La Matanza, ordered an urgent search of the accused’s home, located on Estrada street at 2600, in Rafael Castillo. During the procedure, the three stolen ampoules of fentanyl were found, confirming the suspect’s responsibility.

Although Mansilla was charged with theft and detained for several hours, he was released while the judicial process against him continues. The authorities are now investigating whether the nurse was involved in other similar robberies.

The “zombie” drug

Fentanyl, popularly known as the “zombie drug,” has gained notoriety in recent years. This substance, up to 50 times more potent than heroin and 100 times more than morphine, represents a growing danger due to its high risk of overdose.

There are two variants of this drug: pharmaceutical fentanyl, used in medical treatments, and its illicit counterpart, manufactured clandestinely. In the medical field, fentanyl is prescribed to relieve severe pain, especially in post-surgical patients or those with cancer in advanced stages. However, its use has transcended therapeutic purposes. The illegal production of fentanyl for recreational use has expanded worldwide, ignoring its extreme potency and the devastating consequences it can have on health. This trend has increased the number of deaths from overdose.
