The Permanent Assembly for Human Rights (APDH) of La Matanza has called for an event aimed at restoring a mural that honors 35 victims of State terrorism linked to the town of Isidro Casanova, which has been vandalized.
In a context of growing concern over attacks on memory sites and public policies related to human rights, the Permanent Assembly for Human Rights of La Matanza invites the community to participate in a Day of Memory.
This event will take place on Saturday, January 11, at 3:00 p.m., at Isidro Casanova Square (located at Seguí and República de Portugal), and its goal is to restore the vandalized mural that pays tribute to the 35 victims of State terrorism connected to the town of Isidro Casanova.
The mural, a symbol of resistance and collective memory, was recently attacked, prompting widespread outrage in the community. The restoration will not only be an artistic act but also a gathering of civic commitment to reaffirm the values of memory, truth, and justice.
APDH invites attendees to bring elements such as paint, stencils, music, poetry, and signs, to turn this day into a space for collective expression.
Concerns Over the Dismantling of Human Rights Policies
This event takes place against the backdrop of alarming national developments, where various human rights organizations have denounced measures that seriously affect memory policies. In a joint statement, organizations such as Madres de Plaza de Mayo Línea Fundadora, the Argentine League for Human Rights, and the Permanent Assembly for Human Rights, among others, condemned the recent mass layoffs at the National Secretariat of Human Rights, headed by Alberto Baños with the approval of Justice Minister Mariano Cúneo Libarona.
The layoffs, carried out on December 31, involve the dismantling of strategic areas like the former ESMA, an internationally recognized space for memory since 2004. Furthermore, the closure of the Haroldo Conti Cultural Center has been denounced, leaving its workers in precarious conditions or without access to their positions.
The organizations warn that these decisions directly impact historical research, support for witnesses and victims, and litigation in cases involving crimes against humanity, putting at risk the continuity of essential policies for collective memory and the respect of human rights.
A Call for Collective Action
The Day of Memory in Isidro Casanova is a concrete response to the advance of denialism and the deterioration of public policies on human rights. Beyond the restoration of the mural, this gathering seeks to strengthen civic commitment in the face of attempts to erase historical memory.
Memory, as a collective act, requires the commitment and participation of all. The invitation is open to those who wish to reaffirm that human rights are an inalienable cause, and that the struggle for truth and justice remains ongoing.
