This course, which began in 1989, on the initiative of the person who was the director of the ward for almost 30 years, Chino Oliveri, was suspended only during the two years of the corona virus pandemic. More than 700 residents of the María Elena neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods have graduated from it and were trained in the basic tasks of health care.

The people must take their health into their own hands.

The course lasts one year, is given every Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. and is absolutely free, the only requirement is to be over 13 years old and know how to read and write. The purpose of the course is to provide health knowledge and practices so that, as its founder, Chino Oliveri, said, “the people must take health into their own hands,” a slogan that is written on the external walls of the room. That has been the guiding principle of these 33 years of this Popular Health School located in a primary care room deep in the district of La Matanza, in a neighborhood that emerged from the struggle of families for land and housing, and among other needs, health. This current reality has to do with this organization and popular struggle.

What happens to those who graduate?

In this course, 25 students graduated, of which 23 were women, in general, the majority of the participants are women. According to Hugo Pollola, current director of the health center, the orientation taken by those who have been trained there is diverse, while some use what they learned in assisting their for neighbors in the neighborhood, there are those who continue studying professional health careers and some have also stayed for different periods to work in the room itself.

The party was attended by members of the Habitar Project, with its director Julián Salvarredy, María Elisa Maroni, former director of secondary school N°57, a group of workers from Health Region II with their director, Dr. José Berrios, who sent greetings from Ariel Oliveri, son of Chino and author of the book entitled “El Dr. Chino y la Salita”; Dr. Leandro Santaella, Director of Health of the municipality of La Matanza, and members of the Board of Directors of the “Nuria Benitez” Neighborhood Board of the María Elena neighborhood, such as Miriam Aranda and Gloria Ramírez, president and vice president respectively.
