Vélez defeated Huracán and is the champion of the 2024 Argentine Professional League! With goals from Claudio Aquino and Damián Fernández, El Fortín secured the victory they needed to claim their 17th title and celebrated with their fans at the José Amalfitani Stadium.

It wasn’t an easy challenge for Vélez. With two finals lost in 2024 (the League Cup against Estudiantes and the Argentine Cup against Central Córdoba), El Fortín had one last chance. One final train was passing through Liniers. It was either rise to glory or set a record for three local finals lost in the same year. Beyond Huracán, a team also with chances, Vélez’s main rival was their own ghosts. How would such a young squad react to such immense pressure, with a physically exhausted team? In a team like Quinteros’ that makes intensity its creed, losing that could mean losing the championship as well.

But Vélez stood tall. In the hottest moments, in the decisive ones, they returned to their best form. At the Amalfitani Stadium, they played a perfect match, never putting their lead in the Professional League in danger. They ended up as great champions for their performance throughout the year, not least of which was reaching the final stages in all three domestic competitions. This Sunday, while Talleres struggled against Newell’s, El Fortín wiped Huracán off the field, already leading by two goals at halftime. From Maher Carrizo’s daring play (always a game-changer), to Ordoñez’s balance with and without the ball, the solidity of their center-backs, and Aquino’s runs into the box, Vélez made the difference.

90% of these names are young players from the club. An inexhaustible talent factory, who went from playing a final to avoid relegation to reaching three finals as champions in just one year. That’s not a small feat; it’s huge.

Vélez also showed character. In the 30th minute, Aquino got his redemption. After Galíndez had saved a close-range goal following a great collective play (it seemed like it was going to get complicated again), Aquino found himself alone again in front of the goalkeeper. Carrizo made a great individual play, left him alone, and with a double shot, Aquino scored. In the 41st minute, Huracán lost focus on a free kick, and Damián Fernández scored. The Amalfitani Stadium breathed a sigh of relief and then exploded. The stage was set for the celebrations. Everything was sealed. Too many things would have to happen in 45 minutes for Vélez not to be crowned champion. At least two goals from Huracán and one from Talleres in Córdoba. But the locals already had it in the bag and weren’t going to let it go.

In fact, the party extended even more when Newell’s took the lead in Córdoba. With half an hour left for the celebrations, Vélez had already been informed. With plenty of reasons to celebrate, they once again proved that in Argentine football, young players continue to flourish on fertile ground.
