In October, formal wages measured by the RIPTE index (Average Taxable Remuneration of Stable Workers) showed an increase of 6.6 percent. This rise significantly exceeded the inflation rate of 2.7 percent for that month, representing an improvement compared to previous months when wage increases were 3.8 percent in August and 4.1 percent in September.

This time, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded an inflation rate of 2.4 percent in November, so a slight improvement in wages is expected as they maintain stability towards the end of the year.

The Context of Wage Recovery

The performance of the RIPTE reflected a recovery scenario for registered workers after the strong impact of the devaluation and adjustments at the end of 2023. Since May, due to some agreements in collective bargaining and adjustments for those not covered by collective agreements, wages began showing a growth trend.

However, the Ministry of Labor clarified that the RIPTE should not be interpreted as a comprehensive indicator of the evolution of all wage incomes, as it is mainly used for pension purposes and does not include non-remunerative increases or wages from new jobs.

For this reason, variations in this index may differ from other indicators, such as the INDEC Wage Index, which also covers the income of informal workers.

Comparison with Previous Years

If we consider the previous year, from November 2023, calculated wages grew by 156.4 percent, while the consumer price index rose by 159.8 percent in the same period. This reveals a cumulative drop of 1.3 percent in purchasing power during the first months of Javier Milei’s government, and a much smaller reduction compared to the 20 percent deterioration recorded in the previous six years.

The 2.4 inflation rate for November continues the slowdown observed in October. The positive outlook remains with this statistic, as the slower inflation rate helps wage increases either match or exceed the price disparity, consolidating the recovery of purchasing power towards the year’s end.

According to the latest reports, in October 2024, the average RIPTE wage reached $1,146,474.18, a significant increase compared to $447,079.57 recorded in November 2023. Meanwhile, in the private sector, the gross average wage in September was $1,297,860, with a median wage of $998,468.

These figures confirm the positive growth trend in income, though there is still a slight cumulative loss relative to annual inflation.

Impact on the Basic Basket in November

Despite the slowdown in inflation, the cost of the basic food basket (CBA) and the total basic basket (TBA) continued to rise significantly. In November, the CBA, which measures the minimum income needed to cover essential food for families, increased by 2.9 percent. The TBA, which also includes essential goods and services like transportation, healthcare, and education, rose by 3.1 percent.

This means that a typical family needed around $280,000 per month to avoid falling into poverty, and $130,000 to avoid being considered indigent. While these increases are lower than those observed earlier in the year, they continue to strain the incomes of households with fewer resources, many of which have informal jobs.
