The 26th round, the penultimate of the championship, will kick off at 5:00 PM with the clash between Deportivo Riestra and Barracas Central. There’s little at stake for both teams aside from their long-standing rivalry since the latter’s promotion.

Deportivo Riestra has passed its adjustment period in the Primera División and earned crucial points that brought them some peace of mind. With relegation removed, the team relaxed and now carries a seven-game winless streak, with six consecutive draws and a loss to Instituto in Córdoba.

As for Barracas Central, the strong first half of the year and the dream of playing in the Copa Sudamericana are now behind them. They are now focusing on accumulating as many points as possible to reach 50 in the annual table to improve their average.

Then, at 8:00 PM, it will be Sarmiento vs. Defensa y Justicia in a match that could be key for qualification to international competitions. Defensa y Justicia is fighting for a spot in next year’s Copa Sudamericana, competing directly with Lanús and Platense, who are currently their main rivals.

Sarmiento is still getting used to Javier Sanguinetti’s ideas, although they’ve had very tough matches. The former Banfield coach debuted in Córdoba against Talleres, then hosted Platense and faced Vélez in Liniers. Every point is important for the team from Junín, who is still struggling near the relegation zone.

Vélez and the Possibility of Winning the Title

Huracán’s loss to Talleres in Córdoba and Racing’s defeat in the “match of the year” against Estudiantes gave Vélez a huge boost, putting them close to clinching the title. However, they face a tough opponent when they visit Unión on Saturday evening. Unión needs the points to secure an international spot, and they are tough to beat at home.

If Vélez wins on April 15, it will open a major opportunity for them to become champions. This would eliminate Huracán and Racing from contention and would only require Talleres not to win against Gimnasia at El Bosque. Even if Talleres wins, Vélez would benefit from a superior goal difference.

Currently, Vélez has a goal difference of +21, while Talleres has +8, and Racing and Huracán have +12 and +11, respectively. Since there are no tiebreakers in case of a points tie at the top, Vélez is in a strong position, and a win in Santa Fe would be celebrated greatly.

It would also provide some relief to the squad, as they will play the Copa Argentina final against Central Córdoba from Santiago del Estero on Wednesday, December 11. This comes right in the middle of their league title chase and before a possible final against Huracán.

The Final of the “Reduced” Playoff in the Primera Nacional

Following Aldosivi’s promotion after defeating San Martín de Tucumán, the Primera Nacional will decide the second promotion spot, with Gimnasia de Mendoza and San Martín de San Juan facing off at Belgrano’s stadium in Barrio Alberdi.

Gimnasia pulled off an upset against San Martín in La Ciudadela and will now look to secure a historic promotion to the Liga Profesional. The Mendoza club has only participated in the old National Tournaments and wants to join Godoy Cruz and Independiente Rivadavia, the other two teams from the province currently in the top tier.

For San Martín, they were relegated in 2018, and since then, it’s been tough to assemble a competitive squad. This year, however, they’ve managed to put together a strong team and recently defeated Nueva Chicago in the semifinals. The San Juan community has high hopes, and the match will carry special significance due to the historic rivalry between Mendoza and San Juan.
