“If things go wrong, it’s because of foreigners like Bolivians, Peruvians, Brazilians, and Paraguayans, never an American”

On the radio show, Vanina Biasi, a national congresswoman for the Left Front, strongly criticized the government’s decision to impose fees on foreigners in matters of health and education.

At the beginning of the interview, Vanina Biasi shared her opinion on the announcement by spokesperson Manuel Adorni: “First of all, I believe these are not random statements but rather attempts to cover up other central issues in the economic and social policies of this government. These are matters that seek to fuel political debates within society to deepen a divide that leads us to fight among ourselves.”

“If you’re a foreigner, if you have a certain sexual or gender identity, if you have political militancy. And so on,” she added.

In line with this, she emphasized, “All of this serves to close off an ideology within society that allows them to implement a sinister plan, where those affected by the plan end up fighting among themselves over different topics that the right-wing installs.”

“What they announced is completely false”

Continuing, the congresswoman from the FIT (Left Front) said: “In this case, yesterday’s announcement is about installing xenophobia. The announcement itself has two central aspects. It has a huge xenophobic component and a large component of ignorance. What they reported is absolutely false, it’s a lie.”

“From now on, foreigners who are not residents in Argentina will not be able to enroll directly in the Argentine university system. They are planning to charge fees in these cases. I work at the UBA (University of Buenos Aires) and I know the enrollment requirements. What they can do is for foreign residents of the country, who are subject to the same laws as Argentine citizens, pay taxes, and live in the country, which is what is required,” she detailed.

She also pointed out that “this group makes up 4 percent of students in national universities” and that “it has no influence or impact at any level.”

“A xenophobic debate”

Biasi further explained: “What Adorni says is a lie because he specified that these are non-resident foreigners, and it’s important for the public to know that all they do in our national universities is a paid activity. They come to take individual courses because the professor is renowned or whatever.”

“This is arranged through agreements between Argentine national universities and foreign universities. They pay a lot for the course. Recently, the university that charged the least was $150 for a single course. Really, everything Adorni is proposing is just smoke and mirrors to introduce a debate that is about xenophobia,” she specified.

At the same time, she remarked, “If things go wrong, it’s because of foreigners like Bolivians, Peruvians, Brazilians, and Paraguayans, but never an American.”

“Debates that are irrelevant”

To close, she analyzed the issue regarding health: “Regarding health, he said they are going to charge. Health in our country is decentralized, and foreigners who are not residents are already being charged. He cannot decide what the province of Salta will do with them because it’s a resolution already made by the Salta government. This statement is just another smoke and mirrors tactic.”

“Ultimately, these are debates that are irrelevant. In national universities, there is a 4 percent of foreign residents enrolled, particularly at the School of Medicine, where the number is higher. There are many Brazilians and Ecuadorians. It’s important to know this because Ecuador is a dollarized country, with a government friendly to Javier Milei, but it can’t retain its students because it doesn’t offer an adequate education system for the kind of training they want to receive there,” she concluded.
