At the beginning of the interview on No Te Duermas, Teresa Alfaro referred to the current context in the struggle: “What I can say is that there is no good news unfortunately. A meeting was requested on Monday for Tuesday and the workers were not received at all. Therefore, an assembly was held with all the self-convened workers of the Association of Professionals and Technicians and ATE. It was decided that on December 5th there will be a hug in the hospital and on Tuesday the 10th a strike.”

“There are many pressures in the hospital, they are trying to suspend our shifts because they consider that it is already, that the dialogue is closed for them. A 3 percent and $30,000 increase was signed again. At this time, the hospital will be governed by a budget for this year that, compared to what the family basket is, will be very little”; she added.

Regarding the latter, she said that “the budget for 2025 will be the same as this year” and that “they do not want to hire personnel and if a machine were to break or need repair, whether it is air conditioning or central heating, with that budget they give it will not be enough”.

“In no job is anyone superfluous”

On the other hand, the interviewee emphasized the work they do together with the rest of the health professionals: “You have to look at everything, the infrastructure, the supplies, the personnel. For example, yesterday the Deputy Medical Director, Dr. Pereira, was there saying that this hospital was run with two or three doctors and that the rest of the personnel was unnecessary”.

“In reality, we are all necessary, in no job is anyone superfluous. On the contrary, they are missing. We have the specialty of pediatrics that unfortunately not all colleagues have,” he said.

And he also pointed out that “I have been there for 35 years and each year is much more demanding than the previous one because the pathologies mutate and because there is an economic crisis that affects the children directly” and that “if the parents do not have the money to vaccinate them now there is an outbreak of measles for example.”

“Some cannot get to the centers because they do not have the money to pay the ticket,” he lamented.

In closing, Alfaro pointed out: “Regarding the salary issue, it is directly affecting all the staff because they all have multiple jobs and in the private sector they are actually paid more and they are not required as much as in this hospital that has national recognition and international prestige.”

“Children come from other countries, from other provinces with very severe pathologies, there are cases that are only seen in books, there are protocols that have to be created for new pathologies and use all the teaching that one has in medicine,” he stressed.

She then clarified that “preparation and training is continuous and permanent. I can say that, despite the fact that I have been working in this environment for 35 years, I learn something new every day” and that “what Dr. Pereira said is really unacceptable because no health center is maintained with two or three doctors.”

“They themselves had also signed so that they would give us those $50,000 bonuses, which are the remainder that is left because all the parents declare their social security at the hospital. It is better for them to take them to Garrahan because they charge them half or less in some cases,” she concluded.
