With five matches remaining in the Liga Profesional, Instituto is left without a coach following the resignation of former Huracán coach Diego Dabove.

The news of Diego Dabove’s resignation at Instituto came as a surprise. It’s true that the team’s results hadn’t been the best, and they had fallen out of the top positions in the championship and the annual table for Copa Sudamericana qualification. However, the coach had appeared strong and confident in every press conference.
Dabove first communicated his decision to the players after the morning training session, and shortly after, the official statement from the Córdoba club was released, thanking him for his year-and-a-half-long work and confirming they would be looking for a replacement in the short term.
Despite some poor results recently, the final straw for the former Huracán coach was the pressure from the club’s supporters. The fan group confronted the players, and it became too much for the head coach, who decided to step down and interrupt a process that had dreams of continental glory.
In total, Dabove coached 60 matches, with 20 wins, 17 draws, and 23 losses. His statistics show a 42.7% effectiveness rate, translating to 77 points out of 180 possible.
Sava Rebuilds Amid Player Departures
Atlético Tucumán dropped points in the final stretch of the year, distancing themselves from the top of the Liga Profesional standings. However, they still aim to earn as many points as possible to secure a spot in next year’s Copa Sudamericana. On Monday, they will host Huracán, one of the main contenders in the tournament.
Gianluca Ferrari is one of the key absences for coach Facundo Sava, as the center-back was sent off in the match against Unión in Santa Fe. His replacement will likely be Uruguayan Matías de los Santos, who came on to reinforce the defense. Adrián Sánchez suffered a hamstring tear and will also miss the match against Huracán. In this case, Matías Orihuela and Tomás Castro Ponce will compete for a spot in the starting lineup.
On the other hand, Sava welcomes back two key players, Renzo Tesuri and Nicolás Romero, who are both crucial to the team, especially Romero, who is also a significant goal-scoring threat. Rodrigo Melo and Gino Peruzzi, who were both recovering from injuries, have now trained with the team, although it is still uncertain whether they will be included on the bench.
What’s Happening with the International Supercup?
This new tournament was created in 2022 as part of an agreement between the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and the United Arab Emirates. As a result, Boca Juniors and Racing Club, the top two teams in the annual table that year, faced off in the UAE, with Racing winning under coach Fernando Gago.
The 2023 edition is supposed to feature River Plate and Talleres. Initially, it was set for February or March, but no agreement was reached with the organizers. There was even speculation about moving the venue after it failed to deliver commercially and financially to host the final in Asia.
The match has been delayed throughout the year, with the most recent speculation pointing to the October FIFA window. However, it now seems the final will take place in February 2025. The preferred venues are Chile or Uruguay, to maintain the international format, but if this is not possible, Mendoza or Santiago del Estero could be alternatives.
The main goal is to have the match after the pre-season and at the start of the 2025 season. It’s also worth noting that if this superfinal takes place, River Plate would currently qualify for the 2024 edition, along with Vélez Sarsfield, who leads the annual table.
