The current situation in the struggle

At the beginning of the conversation, Jorge Toledo narrated how the conflict is developing: “The context we are going through is a multinational company that says it is in crisis and that, in the same balance sheets it presented, not only does it show that it is not in crisis but that there was a financial maneuver.”

“Today, we find ourselves with the situation of hundreds of dismissals, of colleagues who had their jobs taken away arbitrarily and without just cause,” he lamented.

He also said that “in the face of this situation, we have denounced in all the corresponding places, in the Secretary of Labor and also in the Ministry of Province” and that “we have a hearing in the delegation of Banfield and obviously in view of the situation we want to denounce what happened.”

The problem with security

In line with the latter, the interviewee emphasized the poor treatment they received from the police forces: “In the first hearing we had last week, which was virtual, we demonstrated in front of the delegation with the dismissed colleagues and many in solidarity who have been accompanying our struggle, that we were received by a disproportionate presence of the Buenos Aires police.”

“What happened was something that we are not going to let go and that we will continue to express, exercising our right as workers and protected by the national constitution,” he added.

Consequently, he explained that “the hearing was with the Bridgestone company, with which we have more than 400 dismissals” and that “the employers continue with their intransigent position, of not even respecting the rules of good faith at a negotiating table.”

“We understand that it was the first hearing and in the second a situation occurs that draws attention. On Thursday afternoon we were notified that today’s virtual hearing was being lifted and they called us to a face-to-face hearing in the afternoon, at the same time that we should have gone to demonstrate in La Plata in front of the provincial government,” he described.

“They legalized illegality”

In the final part of the note, the member of the Union insisted: “We took it as a maneuver to get that demonstration out of the way and in the face of this we called on all colleagues to demonstrate again at the Banfield delegation and we have already drawn up a program of actions for next Thursday to be able to reschedule what was for today. This behavior caught our attention.”

“If an agreement is not reached, there will surely be another meeting because the deadline for compulsory conciliation is next Tuesday. The behavior of the Bridgestone company is to ratify a contempt for the workers and a position of bad faith,” he said in response to the question from the table.

Regarding feelings, he stressed that “they have been attacking the group of colleagues for a long time and in an unacceptable way” and that “I tell the colleagues that, as in everything, you win or you lose but there are rules for each situation. Here we find this thing that they have legalized illegality for the employers that is against the workers.”

“It is very difficult if the administrative portfolios do not intervene as they should. They should have the moral and the obligation, even as citizens in our country. Because they allow them to transgress the laws and the articles that govern us. It is a very complex picture but we have an enormous commitment to the work that we do and we will not stop demanding what we think is fair and protected by the law,” he concluded.
