At the beginning of the note in “No Te Duermas”, the Matanzas councilor in the Workers’ Left Front, Natalia Hernández, told the hosts that she was “angry about the hypocrisy” and because, although there were movements of struggle in the streets, especially in 2015 with the force of Ni Una Menos, “there was no change for the situation of women, the defense of their rights and diversity.”

“A Ministry of Women and Diversity was created, but materially there was no change in the situation and it is increasingly critical. I was just looking at the case of the girl from Lomas del Mirador who suffers gender violence, she has been missing for a week, I think. So it is very alarming and I think that, in this situation of social and economic crisis, is anyone talking? Has anyone raised the issue, has anyone taken the numbers? Is anyone talking about what a woman who most likely suffers gender violence does today, and is in charge of her children alone? With precarious jobs to be able to maintain the food for her children and even rent,” she reviewed at the beginning.

The interviewee spoke about the proposal they are putting forward and explained: “We presented a draft ordinance that is a social rental and it also arose as an initiative, an exchange with the Organization of Feminist Maternities of La Matanza, with which we have been working, because one of them even had to move. They raised her rent four times, she could not afford it, her daughter lost her social relationships, her school, they had to go to another district, which lent her a place.”

“I am a member of the Pan y Rosa women’s organization, as comrades of the Socialist Workers Party, and we want and fight to truly end the situation of oppression of women and diversity, against the exploitation of the situation that we suffer and that is closely linked to the system. We have to seek the reproduction of this situation in which we live in the production of traffic,” she confessed.

Also, during the interview, the councilor addressed a topic that, according to her, affects millions of inhabitants, the rental situation: “Last year, we presented a comprehensive project for the district, an ordinance, to declare a housing emergency for five years and address a municipal land bank, the issue of rents and the public works plan for the construction of housing, which is an important objective, because access to housing is a constitutional right. It affects more than four million families in Argentina.”

Rents and energy

“According to official data from ReNaBaP, in the province of Buenos Aires, 74 percent of households are supported by women. That is, in working-class neighborhoods, settlements, and so on, women have a lot of responsibility in the homes. And of that responsibility, 90 percent are single-marriage families, that is, the woman alone in the care of her children. The jobs are precarious, we know that making ends meet is impossible, the situation of women who received potential work that is frozen at 74 thousand pesos is very alarming,” she said.

In line with the above, the interviewee said: “What we developed in this project is very simple, taking examples even from Europe, a social rental bonus for these situations, creating a district registry of women from single-parent families, their situation and a bonus for which the guarantor is also the state of the rental and also putting taxes on vacant housing, on vacant land, which would allow progress or encourage renting, which is also a problem because there is little.”

The interviewee also revealed where the money would come from for the project they want to carry out: “We suggested that, in La Matanza, last year we pointed out the number of companies that export in dollars, that they are earning a lot and we think that a rate should be established. What corresponds to the municipality is a special rate for large companies for the direct financing of this program. I think that the priorities should be changed because, in La Matanza, they gave 74 thousand square meters to Marcos Galperin, the businessman who is earning the most in our country in the central market.”

“The Commission of Genders and Diversity of the Deliberative Council does not work. We in particular have 11 projects that we were reviewing weeks ago, that we presented from the bands of the Frente Izquierda Unidad that we want to start discussing. What we trust is in the organization from below, we want that, in the Deliberative Council, the decisions are public, that the truth also comes”, ended.
