Animal Help is one of the many shelters that put their time and heart into rescuing animals from the street that were abandoned or lost. In a conversation with Diario NCO, they told how they started the activity: “The project was born from the group’s willingness in January 2022. We already knew each other from a group that spreads lost animals in the neighborhood and, after talking and defining the creation of the group, we got going with the creation of a name, social networks, etc.”
“The specific intention of the shelter is to add our grain of sand to the neighborhood, since in La Matanza the lack of empathy and ignorance about animals is incredible. Unfortunately, our municipality is absent when it comes to castrations and animal rights, which is why we founded Animal Aid to help those helpless and voiceless people,” they added.
They also said that “our work extends throughout Ciudad Evita and its surroundings, we rescue from wherever we can and they ask us for help” and that “we take cases from all over La Matanza, in the Central Market and even in Zona Sur/CABA.”
“It is essential that, when alerts arrive, those same people or relatives join us as transit homes, which are our support to continue rescuing, since without them, our houses would be overflowing and, without adoptions, we could not rescue more due to lack of space,” they indicated.
Volunteer tasks
Regarding the number of members, they stressed: “It is very difficult to cover all the tasks, since it is not only about rescuing and that’s it, it has a deeper background.
Today our group is based on 4 neighbors, Ale, Agos, Noe and Juli, who manage everything.”
“It is difficult to maintain so many lives and know the needs of all, that is why we keep a count of all the rescued, their expenses, and their stories so that they are all told on social media and show the expenses that are generated, so that everything is transparent. We subsist based on donations and dissemination,” they added.
In addition, they also specified that “then we have a list of people who help us whenever they can, whether in transit homes, transfers and volunteering, we are VERY grateful to them, we can mention some: Nicky, a neighbor from Palermo; Mariana, a neighbor from Aldo Bonzi; Mirta, a neighbor from Ciudad Evita; who transport us whenever they can” and that “in transfers we have Ale Ailín, Vicky, Raúl, Nadia, Daniela, Juana.”
“Volunteering is very simple, tasks are assigned that everyone can do, such as photographing our rescued animals, taking them to the vet or going to buy supplies. We also collect recyclables as another alternative to collect some pesos, which are collected by the neighbors and institutions that we then go out to sell,” they said.
The impact on society
When asked, they showed agreement to a certain extent with the reception of the people: “The truth is that our mission has a very positive impact, and we want to continue contributing so that one day so much abandonment and animal overpopulation will end. The line is very fine between those who have a greater commitment, and those who do not care.”
“Unfortunately in La Matanza there is no awareness or importance about animal life, and this causes these unjust issues to continue to exist.
The rescuers are tired, but we repeat this motto until there is not one more abandoned animal on the street: the solution is to CASTRATE. We will stop seeing alerts, dead babies, run over or in bad condition, when we start to neuter our pets and those of others”, they lamented.
They also stressed to the general public, whether or not they have animals: “If you see a little animal on the street, and you have the possibility of neutering it, do it! Zoonosis Matanza is very deteriorated, and offers far below the minimum number of neutering appointments, but if you can take advantage of it, do it. For a country without animal overpopulation and with more empathy, it starts at home”.
A closing message
To conclude, they left a message: “We would like to invite readers to join the movement. If you are interested in helping and changing La Matanza, write to us. The more of us there are, the faster we will end this torture, and the easier it will be for all the shelters”.
