The districts of the Western Zone that make up the health regions VII and XII will have a biological larvicide that will help prevent mosquito disease.
Within the framework of the Buenos Aires Plan for Preparation and Response against dengue and as part of the preparations for the arrival of summer, the provincial government acquired 600 liters of a biological larvicide to prevent mosquito disease that will be distributed to the Municipalities of the Western Zone
It is the larvicide Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), and the health portfolio explained that it is a “biological larvicide that selectively eliminates mosquito larvae and gnats, interrupting the reproductive cycle.”
The municipalities of the Western Zone that will receive this product to prevent dengue are: La Matanza, Tres de Febrero, Hurlingham, Ituzaingó, Morón, Moreno, Merlo, General Rodríguez and Marcos Paz. In addition, they will also participate in training on entomological surveillance (of the mosquito) and the use of Bti.
Benefits of larvicide to combat dengue
The Ministry of Health of Buenos Aires indicated that the use of this biological larvicide insecticide is strategic because it considers environmental health since, unlike the application of adulticides, it does not cause damage or alteration of the biodiversity of species, it is harmless to people and animals, cheaper, easy to apply and does not generate resistance.
In addition, this larvicide can be used by vector control personnel, health agents or health promoters with the proper training. Bti should be used periodically in potential mosquito breeding sites due to the accumulation of water that cannot be eliminated or neutralized, such as: junkyards, tire shop tubs and tubs, elevator shafts and construction sites. Its application in water containers for human or animal consumption is not recommended.
