You Heard It on No Te Duermas

In the radio program, Gabriel Solano, a deputy from the Federal Capital for the Left Front, spoke about the appointment of Juan Bautista Ordóñez as Secretary of Childhood and launched a sharp critique of the government.

At the beginning of the interview, Gabriel Solano criticized the selection of the new official: “He is an executive at one of the leading online betting companies, Codere, which has grown exponentially in recent years. This type of betting system has become relatively marginalized compared to the new online gambling system, which spans various areas but is mainly focused on football and other sports. It’s destructive to people’s lives and to sports as well.”
“Think about countries where entire leagues have had to nullify their championships because online betting led to match-fixing. What concerns me the most is that today, the number one debate in Argentina’s educational system and in the country as a whole, is about how we can stop online gambling among young people,” he expanded.
He added, “The idea is to end gambling in homes, and if we appoint an executive from an online gambling company, we’re not tackling the problem — it’s an absurdity at the very least.”
The Role of the Government
Continuing on the topic, the deputy pointed out, “The problem is not that the government used to do something and now, with this official, they’ll stop doing it. On the contrary, it’s a confirmation of why they’re doing nothing about the issue. But this is like putting a fox in charge of the henhouse; we’re appointing someone with vested interests in the success of his company. I don’t know if he’s a shareholder or not, but he certainly has a direct interest in the profits of that company, and those profits are directly linked to young people gambling. The more kids gamble, the more they earn.”
“Obviously, I don’t think he has any experience in this field. This government has created a million more indigent youth in just six months. It’s not a government concerned with adolescence because there are boys and girls who can’t eat, and that’s the reality in Argentina today. This situation is deepening because the government’s economic policies are heading in that direction,” he added.
He also pointed out that “there’s salary cuts, layoffs, the dismantling of social assistance, and the closing of community kitchens,” and said that “if these measures are implemented, we end up with a million indigent kids like we have right now.”
“Then they appoint a Secretary for Childhood who is actually an executive in an online gambling company, and his business is involved in this industry. This is a government that is against the interests of the people and of children,” he declared.
The Situation with Food and Community Kitchens
On another topic, the interviewee emphasized the issue of food distribution: “The Ministry of Human Capital is disastrous because Sandra Pettovello is in charge of many areas like labor, education, and social assistance, and in all of them, things have gotten worse. In particular, they have regressed in everything related to social matters and childhood.”
“A responsible official should be focused on improving assistance and creating active policies to lift children out of poverty, but instead, we’re seeing the opposite. In Argentina, we’ve had raids on community kitchens while kids are dying of hunger,” he stressed.
To conclude, he stated that “there have been seven court rulings, and the food distribution is still not being carried out” and that “it was discovered that the Ministry had food stored away, which was rotting, as they pursue a policy of dismantling the community kitchens.”
