The Current Situation in La Matanza

At the start of the conversation on “No Te Duermas,” Francisco Lamanna analyzed: “I could summarize our situation in a blunt manner. The elected government has taken a position, and that position requires us all to first consider the general context and then take action regarding what each one of us needs to do. The economy we need to fix is not just the industrial and commercial sectors creating jobs, but rather each person must contribute within their own sphere under these conditions.”

“Paradoxically, the local environment, for reasons justified or not, is becoming increasingly demanding. It seems to me that this is a historic moment for making significant decisions. We need to manage our activities and our chambers in all the areas where the crisis is felt and try to navigate each one’s own ‘ship’ as best as possible,” he added.

He further noted that “this seems to be a collective task we owe to the authorities to give a different direction to the equation” and that “although it has been said that La Matanza is the capital of production and work, we see that many industrial parks are being built, but companies are not coming to La Matanza; instead, they are investing in these other locations.”

“So it seems to me that we need to change the paradigm and think differently because this is the time to do it,” he elaborated.

What Happens in Other Districts

In line with the above, the President of the Chamber of Industry and Commerce stated: “Regarding the promotions offered by other districts like Tres de Febrero or Lomas de Zamora, La Matanza does not offer resistance. So either we wake up or we become increasingly impoverished. Those of us here who care about La Matanza want it to grow, not to become poorer.”

“And companies should be here where the people are. Industrial parks thrive in areas like Morón and Moreno, and here we have only one when the territory is enormous,” he lamented.

Growth Policies

On the other hand, the interviewee emphasized his experience as a former official, saying: “I had the chance to be a municipal official in other governments, including one under Fernando Espinoza, and I laid out concepts for growth and prioritized those who wanted to invest in La Matanza.” He added that “this moment calls for a change in decisions and strategies to at least renew the hope of people who care about the district.”

“And also for the unemployed who have to travel elsewhere for work. I think this is an opportunity being lost and that we all need to help reverse this situation and bring to the forefront the needs that La Matanza has. That is what we see and what everyone knows, but we don’t perceive any proposals,” he explained.

To conclude, he shared the challenges he faced working internally: “I am grateful and pleased to have experienced both sides of the counter, but I must say that it was very difficult to introduce industrial thinking into the Municipality and explain to the industrialists how it works or how to act. They looked at it as if it were opposing situations with different interests. It is the way it is, but there was no collaboration to unite decision points for growth and development.”
