The Technical Group for Aeronautical Restorations (GTRA) recently delivered a new aircraft that can now be admired at the National Aeronautical Museum (MNA), located within the Air Base in Morón, which recently celebrated 23 years of welcoming visitors from the West of the Buenos Aires province.
The aircraft in question is the Sikorsky “S-55/H-19 Chickasaw” helicopter, which was used in the mid-20th century at the I Brigade in the city of El Palomar and made its final flight on May 2, 1965. About five months later, it joined the institution’s fleet but suffered damage over time.
As a result, its restoration process took about five years, as explained by GTRA leader Marcelo Baldelli: “It was exposed to the elements for a long time, and aluminum suffers from corrosion, so we had to repair both structural and external parts. We performed a complete disassembly and installed an electrical system on the dashboard to simulate it being operational.”
In addition to this helicopter, a “Douglas” transport trolley and a runway lighting beacon were added to the collection, which is displayed every weekend in Hangar 4 at the military base. The base is located on Eva Perón Avenue (Provincial Route 17) at 2200.
The Director’s Words at the MNA in Morón
“Our mission is to preserve the historical heritage of Argentine aviation, and this is where the restoration team comes in with the work they do every Saturday, completely on a voluntary basis, keeping each of the aircraft in this museum alive,” stated Carlos Maroni at the inauguration ceremony.
He also mentioned, “The synergy, the team spirit, and the shared vision have made it possible to form a mature team, specialists in their field, and very detail-oriented.”
