Amid growing concern about insecurity in Greater Buenos Aires, a senior officer of the City Police killed two criminals who tried to steal his motorcycle in Isidro Casanova, La Matanza district.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night, around 11 p.m., at the intersection of Ushuaia and M. Esquiro streets. A third assailant was arrested on the spot, while the victim was unharmed.
The incident adds to a series of recent attacks against police officers in the region, such as the murder of Buenos Aires police officer Brian Coria in Castelar, which has intensified political tensions between Minister Waldo Wolff and the Buenos Aires government.
The officer, who was riding a Bajaj Rouser motorcycle, was intercepted by three armed men who got off a Renault Kwid. In response, the police officer used his service weapon, a Pietro Beretta Storm, to defend himself.
In the exchange of gunfire, one of the assailants, identified as D. Verón, died on the spot after being shot in the head. Another, identified as F. López, aged 18, was wounded in the abdomen and taken to the Paroissien hospital, where he later died. The third member of the group was arrested by Buenos Aires police officers.
At the scene of the incident, prosecutor Adrián Arribas, of the Functional Homicide Investigation Unit of La Matanza, ordered the carrying out of expert tests. A replica revolver found in the criminals’ vehicle and two empty 9mm shell casings were seized.
López, who died in hospital, had a criminal record for an attempted robbery in Laferrere in January of last year and for aggravated concealment in April, when he was found with a stolen motorcycle.
After analyzing the circumstances, prosecutor Arribas decided not to take action against the City Police officer, although he ordered the seizure of his service weapon to continue the investigations.
