On the radio program we spoke with Juan Romero, councilor of La Matanza for the Left Front, who referred to the demonstration they held at the doors of the Mercado Libre company and the repression by the security forces.

At the beginning of the talk on No te Duermas, Juan Romero narrated: “We were at the gates of Mercado Libre together with different organizations, with the labor pole and several that met there, in this case in the framework of the 500 blockades throughout the country. Here in La Matanza there were ten, some blockades and others pot-banging. It seemed important to us to participate and be there, although we were received by a military operation that was absolutely disproportionate to go to a demonstration, guarding the doors of a private company.”

“For example, there was the PSA, and we don’t know what to do. Many criteria are being violated here, but we were there. It’s not that we repressed when they tried to block the passage of trucks or the gates, we repressed to ensure that workers didn’t even get close to the doors of Mercado Libre. It seemed significant to us to go,” he added.

Criticism of Mercado Libre

Then, he added that “Marcos Galperin (Executive Director of Mercado Libre) is the richest man in the country at this moment, he has a fortune according to Forbes magazine valued at more than 8 billion dollars. However, he is a VIP planner. Because through state subsidies, direct or indirect, this guy who is the largest businessman in the country saves more than 100 million dollars per year.”

“In state subsidies or exemptions to his company, he saves that money and he also saves almost the same amount of money for being based in Uruguay and not paying taxes in the country. He is a subject who became rich apart from the laws of 2007, promoting industry, technology companies and software. There were different benefits that he had to amass the fortune he has today,” he said.

At the same time, he delved into the working conditions of the company: “In addition, we went to make the claim at the doors of a company that is characterized by having a strong labor flexibility. I know workers from Mercado Libre, young people, who after 3 or 4 years of work have back problems. Behind this paradise that is sold, there is a supreme level of exploitation.”

“He boasts of questioning the left and where he invests the most is in countries that are governed by governments that are supposed, in Milei’s fantasy and his, to be communists. It is very contradictory, and also strictly speaking they are very opportunistic. When it suits them they agitate against taxes and against the state but when it suits them they ask the repressive forces not to bother them at the doors of their company.”

Provocation by the gendarmerie

At the end of the note, Romero again emphasized the repression they suffered: “When we tried to approach the gates, there is a kind of internal route that leads to General Paz, a whole cordon of gendarmerie and PSA came out with shields, with weapons and they hit us with sticks, with shields, they fired rubber bullets, they threw gases that are very harmful.”

“Even then we walked towards General Paz and they followed us permanently. And it is nine blocks, it didn’t make any sense if their objective is to protect the company’s protons. It is a very provocative act by the gendarmerie and by whoever directed that operation,” he said.

He concluded by saying that “it is part of this government that believes that it will be able to contain everything with sticks and there is a growing general discontent.”
