This is what Patricia Carrizo, a resident of the Santa Cecilia neighborhood in González Catán, said in a conversation with Diario NCO about the complicated present they live in relation to the contamination from the burning of garbage.

Just as it happens in Virrey del Pino with the Klaukol paint company, which emits particles that contaminate and cause respiratory illnesses in many families who breathe ground glass, in the Santa Cecilia neighborhood of González Catán something similar happens that causes a lot of concern for those involved.

The neighbors of the neighborhood are greatly affected by the contamination generated by the burning of garbage. These residues, when burned, disperse carcinogenic and atmospheric chemicals that are difficult to avoid for those who live around the dump. The neighborhood is located meters from it and their connection is very close.

In a conversation with Diario NCO, the neighbor Patricia Carrizo provided more details of this problem that has been spreading and not ceasing for some time now.

The difficulties in daily life

At the beginning, Patricia said: “We have been breathing carbon monoxide for more than 65 days, both day and night, due to the burning of an open-air garbage dump. It was a former neighbor, nicknamed Sebi, who started doing it more than 6 years ago saying that it was a sanitary landfill. He began to fill in the land in the neighborhood and then sell it.”

“Our complaints always get shelved because they settle financially with the police station and the firemen, who we get tired of calling and do not come because they say that they do not incur third-party damages,” she accused harshly.

She also said that “we need this to be made public because we cannot continue living like this” and that “there are many older neighbors and there are also children with respiratory problems and pathologies such as allergies in the eyes because of this smoke that plagues us.”

“We want and require that this place be cleaned up to have a plaza, a kindergarten, a health room, basic things that are very necessary in any neighborhood,” she said.

A struggle and a desperate request for dissemination

Hand in hand with the previous topic, the interviewee narrated what they tell the neighbors when they make the corresponding complaints: “They tell us to make the complaints to the Ombudsman of La Matanza, when the complaints were filed there.”

“Even to make a complaint to the prosecutor’s office we first have to go through there and it is all very complex, I guess because the Municipality is also arranged unfortunately,” she said.

On the Facebook account, they constantly post images and videos of the ordeal suffered by the group “Vecinos Unidos de Santa Cecilia”. In a recent post, they wrote: “Let’s stop normalizing what happens in this neighborhood! Let’s stop looking the other way because it affects us all!!!! Pollution KILLS! We can’t let them continue fighting with our health and the health of our children, let’s stop thinking that this is normal!!!”.

And they also reinforced Patricia Carrizo’s idea and indicated that “the Municipality of La Matanza is aware of what is happening, but they decide to continue with this and be accomplices”.

“Hundreds of neighbors have skin problems, respiratory problems and much more serious illnesses caused purely and exclusively by pollution. As a result of this and everything we suffer, it is necessary to file a criminal complaint against those responsible”, said another of the posts on the social network.
